I've been a fan of Jim for quite a few years. I have all of his cds. But this one is heads and shoulders above the rest.

I have always been able to hear the influence of Jim's favorite players in his playing. Early on the Maynard-Don Ellis-Brecker Brothers sounds were very evident in his playing. Jim has always been a first class high note player with a cool funk style who was a decent improviser. In his last couple of cds it became evident that he's been listening to a lot of Freddie. But the funky old Manley style was kind of pushed to the background. On his new cd, "Eight", is seems like he's combined the old Jim with the new, improved improviser Jim. This cd has great arrangements, awesome playing, and something special about the whole "feel" of the music.

I've been listening to Eight constantly while I've been in the car lately. (and that is where I seem to spend most of my free time this time of year) The whole "feel" of the cd has been nagging at the back of my mind. The style here seemed really familiar, but I just couldn't place it. Well, It came to me this afternoon. The arrangements and style and playing are very reminesent of Maynard's recordings of the early 1960's.

Exactly my thoughts as well.  Sort of a cross between the old MF stuff, and the old Severinsen Command recordings, but more towards Mayn.

Heard Jim at the Jazz Bistro in St. Louis a couple of weeks ago.  It is cool to see someone in his mid fifties still getting better.
