Looks like an exceptional year for our Middle School Band. 2nd week of school, all the classes are well ahead of last year!! Trumpets seem very mature....strange..LOL

Yeah who'd have thought the trumpets could ever be mature! LOL

I'm amazed with the title of your post... 242 kids in band. Holy smokes. In this area we'd have to combine 3 or 4 high schools to come up with that and we are a very heavily populated area south of Detroit!

Of course due to Michigan's crazy situation where unemployment is 17% and rising more and more people are leaving.

Good show man... Have a great year!

Hah... same here, John.  242 is more than half of the students in our entire district in grades pre-k-12!

Awesome Dave!

Our reading session with TSWE is on September 19 at Marco De Niza.  If you're looking for any new Middle School music, please come down to hear whats new for 2009/2010.  Middle school music will be from 9 AM to about 10:30 AM.

Hope you have a great year!

I think we're still the largest band program in the state. One Marching Band in Tucson has 220, most schools are not close to that. Our Middle School has gotten smaller the last three years, we keep having large numbers. Symphonic Band has 140 members, we do a SoCal trip every year and end with two days at Disneyland. We do the recording session there, last May Sal Lozano was our conductor and about lost it when he walked in and saw the band. He told me they don't see any bands that size, especially ones that are quiet, pay attention and really read well. The session went very well, we even recorded some of the Fantasia sound tract. Kids can't wait to go back!

Derek!

Always enjoyed that session, say hi to Mike for me.

I buy our years music in the summer (July this year), it's easy now with the internet! Read the score, listen to the recording....our first concert's in early November, third week of school and the kids are really getting things together nicely. I should get Mike over to Guest Conduct!
Have fun reading!
Dave

28% of the whole school is in band. Even with making class sizes larger this year, we added staffing!

Wow, that's great Dave!

Our school district has good bands (among the top in the state and often do well at the national level), but this year they cut out private lessons at the school in some sort of cost-saving measure (that nobody understands, maybe having to do with insurance). They used to have instruction during school hours (band and lunch hours) and after school, but now it'll all be after and the teachers must have the kids home or find another place. Bummer. I taught for a few years but have not the past few (no time), but a lot of private teachers -- and the band directors -- are pretty upset.

Glad to see somebody is doing well, especially after your potential cuts earlier! - Don

Don, I taught in the Cherry Creek School District 25 years ago, and that was common then....not in any District I've been in since or before...we can't use the band room for anything outside the regular day unless you rent it...on the flip side we have four music stores with a couple of blocks of us that teach lessons! Some good instruction, some a little less so. Probably half our kids study! Russ and Deb Plylar teach several of our trumpets!! That's pretty amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
