So I had a thought this am. I went back in my mind as I was playing to what Pat said about my mouthpiece maybe not providing enough reflection and resistance. So, I thought... smaller mouthpiece?
Off I went to the mouthpiece drawer (about a minute ago). I grabbed a 1c, a 5c and a 7c. The 7c was about 1/2 step low. 5c was about a step low. Curiously, my Monette was higher than the 1c. I did concentrate on keeping the sound and airflow more energized and forward. It still seems like I'm playing very loudly, but it is also only the 2nd day I've been really concentrating on it this way. Maybe I'm responding to the vibrancy as volume rather than what it is; whatever it is, I sound different.

You may indeed be interpreting the increased resonance as more volume. Once the lips are responding to the air without hesitation you can begin to back off the air compression, but do not be in a hurry (in your case, at least).
